Hey comic fans! Today we're diving into a fascinating issue from Ghost Rider's early days Ghost Rider #7 that brings us a unique villain with a zodiac twist. Released in May 1974, this issue features an incredible creative team including Tony Isabella on writing duties and Jim Mooney providing the dynamic artwork.
In this action-packed tale, Ghost Rider finds himself battling what appears to be Taurus of the Zodiac Cartel. The action kicks into high gear when Stunt-Master, who witnesses the battle during a nearby signing event, joins the fray. However, things aren't quite what they seem - their opponent suddenly transforms from Taurus into Scorpio!
We learn that their adversary is actually the "One Man Zodiac" - formerly Aquarius of the original Zodiac crime cartel. After the Zodiac's defeat by the Avengers, Aquarius discovered he had a rare lung condition that left him with only a year to live. In his desperation, he made a deal with a demon named Slifer, gaining the power to transform into any zodiac sign.
In a clever but tragic turn, Slifer tricks Aquarius by claiming his year is up when he transforms through all twelve zodiac signs in succession - each transformation counting as a "month." Both Aquarius and Slifer vanish, leaving Ghost Rider to face an even more ominous figure - Satan himself!
This issue perfectly encapsulates the supernatural horror elements that made Ghost Rider such a unique Marvel character, while also tying into the larger Marvel Universe through references to the Avengers and the original Zodiac Cartel.
